An impressive trail leads from Lake Attersee along the castle moat up to the idyllic alpine pasture below the Schafberg.
A HEAD FOR HEIGHTS & SUREFOOTEDNESS ARE A PREREQUISITE HERE
The Valerieweg is well laid out, some sections are secured with steel cables, but caution is advised on some steep drops.
The start of this hike is at the former Jagawirt inn approx. 20 metres to the right of the entrance to the closed Burggrabenklamm gorge. The path to the Eisenaueralm branches off at the small Maria Klamm pilgrimage site. The narrow Valerieweg, built in 1890, is beautifully laid out and leads straight up in serpentines and over steps. Soon you are in the middle of the impressive moat and can look down into the gorge below. You should be free from giddiness. Rope safety devices provide support in several places, you cross the stream on a footbridge and soon reach the Magdalenenquelle spring. You soon come to a junction, where you keep to the right, descend towards Ackergraben and cross under vertical rocks to reach a valley that opens up more and more. Cross the stream once again, climb higher, reach the Unterackeralm and continue over flatter terrain to the Oberackeralm. You finally reach the extensive Eisenaueralm via alpine meadows and forest. You then head towards the Buchberghütte on the wide, gently sloping alpine path. Hikers and mountain bikers meet here beneath the imposing northern precipices of the Schafberg.
